Schedules

Last weekend I attended the Thomas Jefferson Education Forum and spent a day being inspired. I was sick and felt like I was not fully present but got some great ideas nonetheless. One little tidbit I picked up was from the Lazy Organizer who taught us about how to teach children how to work. One of the many things she shared that caught my interest was her schedule.

My husband has been requesting for some time that I move chores from the morning to later in the day because he thought it broke momentum for school. True to form, I resisted at first until of course I heard it from a second witness. Sorry honey!! Oh but he's happy now because I keep telling him how right he is ; ) So I tweaked her schedule to fit our needs and this is loosely what we do now (this week anyway):

7:00 Scriptures
7:15 Daily Dos
7:45 Breakfast/Clean-Up
8:30 Morning Devotional
10:45 Chores
12:30 Lunch/Clean-Up
1:00 Blanket Time
4:00 Dinner Prep (kid of the day helps)
5:30 Dinner/Clean-Up (next kid of day helps/rest of kids clean sweep house)
6:45 PJs
7:00 Read
8:00 Bed

So looking over the plan we are not even following that yet. BUT just swapping chores with learning time has made the day go so smoothly for me. I suppose every family is different and you do what works best for you. I'm on the right track for ours!

What works for you?

  2. Here's a post where she sort of explains it:

She told me after her presentation that she uses blanket time (much like quiet time) so that the children will choose to do quiet learning activities that many times carry over to their free time.
